Aquaman Just Got a Horrific New Superpower

The following contains major spoilers for Aquaman #2, on sale now from DC Comics.

Aquaman has just pushed his new powers beyond anything their original owner did with them, and it is horrifying..

After being dragged through a Darkseid portal to a barren, alien world, the titular hero of Aquaman #2 finds himself besieged by a variety of monstrous threats. While he is more than equipped to handle the initial onslaught he faces, it isn't long before Aquaman is overpowered and imprisoned in a nest of vines that rip at his flesh and draw his blood out to be collected beneath him. Thankfully, he isn't alone, and with some coaching from a battered and bound Arion, Aquaman is able to use his newly acquired hydrokinetic abilities to command the pool of blood to set both of them free.

Aquaman's hydrokinetic powers are just one of the many side effects that the world's heroes are reeling from in the aftermath of Amanda Waller's war against them during DC Comics' Absolute Power event. With her band of Amazo androids known as Task Force VII, Waller was able to steal the vast majority of the world's superpowers from their respective owners. Even though Waller and her Amazo's were ultimately defeated and said powers set free, they didn't all make their way back to the heroes they belonged to. As such, Aquaman found himself suddenly imbued with the hydrokinetic powers belonging to his wife, Mera, who has helped train him in their use since.

The sudden shift in locale that Aquaman recently underwent came not of his own volition, but as a result of his investigation into one of the many anomalies that have cropped up in the wake of Darkseid's apparent destruction. Apart from the obsidian-like Darkseid Anomalies that the likes of the Challengers of the Unknown have been investigating, Aquaman's life has been engulfed in the disappearance of Atlantis as a whole. When venturing forth toward the Darkseid gate left behind in its place, Aquaman was enveloped in a burst of light and energy, all before disappearing for himself.

Arion has long been a part of the DC mythos, albeit a frequently reimagined and relatively obscure part of it as a whole. First seen in Paul Kupperberg and Jan Duuresema's closing story from 1982's Warlord #55, "Atlantis!," Arion was initially introduced as an ancient, immortal demigod of the Atlantean pantheon. In the decades since, Arion has been remade into less of a divine figure and more of a reluctant, mystically empowered hero. The modern day Arion is both a great sorcerer and scientist, as well as one of the fabled Lords of Order, although that hasn't kept him from coming to blows with heroes such as Blue Beetle and Doctor Fate.
