Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Hints At Chris Hemsworth's Final Marvel Movie

Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.

Chris Hemsworth's return as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday has been public knowledge for months now. However, only recently have more details regarding the God of Thunder's future come to light.

A teaser for Avengers: Doomsday has been released, featuring Thor as the main focus. The clip sees Chris Hemsworth's Marvel Cinematic Universe role praying to the Allfathers to grant him strength to take on his next foes.

This thunderous plea appears to suggest that Avengers: Doomsday will mark Thor's final appearance in the MCU. Considering how much of a momentous event the franchise's 39th installment (and fifth Avengers movie) is shaping up to be, the theory is not too much of a reach.

More specifically, the trailer, which has been playing in theaters in front of James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, shows the Asgardian hoping that he will be able to overcome his current obstacle, likely referring to Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. As MCU fans should recall, the Avenger became the adoptive father of Gorr the God-Butcher's (Christian Bale) resurrected child, Love (Hemsworth's real daughter, India), at the end of 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder, and it's theorizied that their relationship will be deepened in Avengers: Doomsday.

When Avengers: Doomsday is released, it will have been more than 15 years since Chris Hemsworth debuted as Thor in his self-titled solo adventure, making the highly anticipated superhero movie (or its 2027 follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars) a perfect opportunity to bid the character farewell. Then again, Marvel Studios had audiences convinced that 2019's Avengers: Endgame was the swan song for several characters, but that was not quite the case after all.

Captain America's Avengers: Doomsday Return Has Also Been Teased

In addition to the tease of Thor's return, a separate Avengers: Doomsday trailer has also been playing in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash, featuring another popular Marvel character played by an actor named Chris. Yes, that's right: Captain America will also return in the highly anticipated flick.

Unlike Thor's clip, this trailer is dialogue-free and waits until the end to show Chris Evans as a young-looking Steve Rogers. However, similar to Thor's teaser, parenthood is a major theme, as the promo seems to reveal that the former Avenger has had a child with Agent Margaret "Peggy" Carter (Hayley Atwell), as indicated by Cap holding an infant in his arms.

The trailer's release follows months, even years, of rumors theorizing that Evans would reprise his most famous role, despite his fate at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers, after traveling through time to replace the retrieved Infinity Stones, reemerged as an older man to explain to his friends that he chose to return to the 1940s, which is when he had suffered a plane crash that put him under ice for decades.

Evans' name was not mentioned in the viral Avengers: Doomsday casting announcement, which already had many surprises of its own, such as the inclusion of several veterans of the Fox-era X-Men movies, including Patrick Stewart and James Marsden, alongside established MCU stars like Anthony Mackie and the cast of 2025 hits Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Of course, the one actor whose involvement in the Avengers: Doomsday cast remains the most surprising is the aforementioned Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The recent Academy Award winner (for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer) had previously achieved a revival of his mainstream success by helping launch the MCU as the title role of 2008's Iron Man, whom he would play several more times until Tony Stark's world-saving sacrifice at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Joe and Anthony Russo are also returning to the franchise to direct the film, which is penned by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely. Plot details beyond what the promotional material has teased have yet to be revealed.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
