Avengers/Invaders #5-12 (2008-2009)

When we left off, Bucky of the Invaders was face-to-face with Bucky-as-Captain-America. Bucky Cap tries to tell his younger self to be careful in the upcoming battle against Red Skull that will lead to him riding a bomb, being thought dead, and, you know, all that Winter Soldier stuff.

Meanwhile the rest of the Invaders and the New Avengers are fighting Tony Stark’s Mighty Avengers team. Most of the Invaders/N.A. flee the fight, but Captain America and Namor are captured.

In the interrogation room, Tony and “Invaders Steve” are finally able to talk. Iron Man explains to Cap that he’s just trying to prevent the World War II heroes from seeing the future and changing it (i.e., he’s trying to stop Captain America from learning that he got assassinated and Iron Man’s support of the Registration Act was a huge contributing factor).

All of this is interesting, but Doctor Strange and the Invaders have figured out that they need to get the Cosmic Cube and reset reality back where it was. And eventually, after experiencing an alternate reality where the Nazis won, that’s exactly what happens.

There’s other interesting adventures along the way. Like original Human Torch learning about Life Model Decoys and identifying with them more than he does with humans.

The Cube “reset” ending makes this pretty much a non-canonical story. But the ride is solid and fun. I enjoyed this far more than I expected.
