Batman Artist Pitches An Anime Adaptation And We Are All In

Annie Banks is a Rotten Tomatoes–approved critic, and CBR editor and writer specializing in anime, comics, and superheroes. Their work has also appeared in Collider and The Mary Sue, where they covered pop culture, fandoms, and entertainment trends. A lifelong fan whose love for storytelling began with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Annie blends critical insight with genuine passion for geek culture, from sci-fi to K-pop.

Absolute Batman artist Nick Dragotta already knows exactly how he wants one piece of the Absolute Universe to come to life through animation, and his pitch is thoroughly exciting.

During a League of Comic Geeks AMA with Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, the team behind Absolute Batman took to the internet to answer questions on a forum-wide basis. Fans were able to ask a maximum of two questions per person to both Snyder and Dragotta, with one answer from Dragotta regarding a hypothetical Absolute Batman anime remaining to be particularly eye-catching.

"Hi Scott & Nick!" user MarvinManhunter wrote, "First of all congrats on the success of Absolute Batman & the Absolute Universe as a whole, my question is are you guys interested in or have had any talks with DC or James Gunn about bringing the Absolute Universe into other media such as Animation, Movies, Toys, etc.?" Dragotta responded to the question, and said "check out the Inart and LPZZ toys debut at Wonderfest in Shanghai for a taste of things to come. I'm not in the know, but I know DC makes and licenses quality stuff so I'm excited to see what comes. Personally, I'd love to see a Studio Trigger anime of Ab Bat."

Absolute Batman has followed the re-imagining of Bruce "Batman" Wayne as a blue-collar civil engineer. Unlike Batman's typical wealthy upbringing, the Absolute Universe introduces a more working-class vigilante who resides in a poverty-stricken part of Gotham City. While Thomas Wayne was killed in a mass shooting at the Gotham Zoo, Martha Wayne has survived, and is deeply involved in Bruce's life. What hasn't changed, though, is the extent of Batman's brutality. "We wanted him to feel like a primal force, just this unstoppable wall coming at you to level anyone in his way," Snyder said in an interview with Games Radar. As the Absolute Universe continues to flesh itself out, Batman fans can expect more rogues such as Scarecrow and Poison Ivy to make their debuts. An undisclosed Robin is confirmed to make their appearance in the comic book's next arc.

DC Comics has created a long and rich history with animation, and an animated Absolute Batman series could absolutely flatter the comic book run's nuance. The DC Animated Universe initially established itself in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series, which featured Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill's legendary Batman and Joker duo. The DCAU officially ended in 2004 with Justice League Unlimited, yet countless additional animated titles still brought DC Comics to life.

In more recent years, Suicide Squad Isekai attempted to pair DC Comics with anime, though the forgettable first season was met with mild responses to an underwhelming approach to The Suicide Squad. Anime series have been inspired by DC Comics in the past, though Dragotta's want for Studio Trigger to take on Absolute Batman could truly be an interesting blend of animated superhero media and anime. With titles such as Kill la Kill, Star Wars: Visions, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners under their belt, Studio Trigger has proven themselves as a fine candidate to take on Absolute Batman as an anime.

Absolute Batman can be purchased in comic book stores, and Absolute Batman #1 can be found on DC Universe Infinite.
