The title for the next Black Panther film has allegedly been revealed, and it carries some serious implications for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Per Production List, the title for the third Black Panther film has been published, along with a rough outline for what fans can expect from it when it arrives. Billed as Shadows of Wakanda, the next film in Marvel Studios' Black Panther series is set to explore the political vulnerability and social unease that Wakanda has been stricken with following the death of Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. Shadows of Wakanda will also reportedly see Letitia Wright's Shuri cement her legacy not just as a warrior, but as one of Wakanda's greatest leaders.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe's original Black Panther (portrayed by the late, great Chadwick Boseman) made his debut all the way back in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, it was just two more years before the character took center stage in his own feature film. After Boseman's passing in 2020, Letitia Wright stepped into the spotlight for 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, saw Shuri take up her brother's old mantle and face off against the impossibly powerful Namor, portrayed by Tenoch Huerta. Barely two months after the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it was confirmed that a third film was in consideration, with development beginning shortly after.
Fans have recently begun speculating on the possibility of Snowfall and F1 star Damson Idris stepping into the role of the Black Panther. Rumors were fueled largely by Idris' recent appearance alongside Black Panther star Angela Bassett, who was seen decked out in an outfit overtly reminiscent of Queen Ramonda regalia. Although there are no firm connections tying Idris to the third Black Panther film, numerous outlets and hopeful audience-goers have pointed towards the possibility of the young Prince T'Challa, son of T'Challa and Lupita Nyongo's Nakia, being aged up for the series' next entry.
How Chadwick Boseman's Legacy Continues to Impact the MCU
Image via Marvel Studios.Ahead of the release of Marvel Zombies, series creator and showrunner Bryan Andrews discussed the show's iconic sequence that sees a silent T'Challa stand firm against the might of a zombified, Infinity Guantlet-wielding Thanos. "We didn’t have Chadwick. If we had Chadwick, it would’ve been completely different choices. If we had Chadwick, he would’ve had his own Star-Lord T’Challa spinoff show long before we did the zombie thing," Andrews said at the time. "But being able to revisit his character in that way, the way it plays out, it was another way to be with him in some strange way, even though there were no words. You know what I mean? It’s still Chadwick’s Black Panther, and that’s rad."
Executive producer Brad Winderbaum noted that the team behind Marvel Zombies were so dedicated to offering a fitting tribute to Boseman in the show that they reached out to the one person who knows the MCU's Black Panther best — Ryan Coogler. "We actually showed an early animatic to Ryan Coogler to get his notes, and he had some great ideas in that sequence that were really additive," Winderbaum explained.
Black Panther 3 has no release date yet.
