Briana Loewinsohn, is touring for her wonderful new semi-autobiographical comic, Raised By Ghosts (Fantagraphics, 2025), the recent winner of the Harvey Award for Best Young adult book. I caught a few of her signings and readings, which are ongoing until the end of October at other stops (find dates and locations here). I commend Loewinsohn for having her cartoonists friends and colleagues join her for panels and signings, making them festive and having a Bay Area indie comics espirit de corps of local cartoonists, which has been missing for quite some time at festivals and signings here! Labor day weekend, Sunday, August 31st, Briana, Gene Luen Yang, Julia Wertz, Jason Shiga, Raina Telgemeier and Wahab Algarmi shared a table and panel at San Francisco Zine Fest. One thing that struck me about seeing them all at the panel is they started out self publishing and became friends through tabling at cons and weekly drawing meet ups at Jason Shiga's house. And all are now established and highly accomplished with their body work, put out by professional publishers and their fanbases are growing constantly. Bruce Simon and Peter Hoey of Coin-Op were also exhibiting at SF Zine Fest. Saturday, August 23rd was the Silver Sprocket group reading of Briana, Julia Wertz, Wahab Algarmi and Thien Pham with Justin Hall in attendance. On Saturday, June 21st, a laid back and fun signing with Jordan Morris at Mission Comics with Thien Pham and Kirt Burdick in attendance. Earlier this spring, she shared an enlightening and humorous panel and signing at the Cartoon Art Museum with Thien Pham and Josh Pettinger. It's definitely worth it to attend one of Briana's signings/panels!
