Captain Britain and MI 13 #5-9 (2008-2009): Hell Comes to Birmingham; Blade joins; 1st Plokta; Captain Midland dies

Issue #5 of this arc is a “prelude” to the main story, in which Blade arrives and joins the team on a mission to respond to a distress call from Captain Midland.  Only as soon as they arrive, Blade impales Spitfire, because she is now a vampire.

This obviously causes some friction.

While this is going on, Captain Britain investigates a new character, Plokta, who is the ruler of the Mindless Ones.  Plokta has decided to venture out of his home dimension and take over the world.  He does so by luring humans into a tower where they are given their wildest desire, only to have their souls stolen and used as a power engine for the Mindless Ones.  Plokta has arrived as a result of a mystical bargain Pete Wisdom made in order to expel all skrulls from England.

Plokta has Britain’s wife, Megann, hostage.

Back to the rest of the team, Faiza is able to heal her teammate and prove to Blade that she, like him, has her vampirism under control.  By the end, she actually kisses him so…Wow.  Weird.

Later, it’s revealed that Captain Midland was bait–he’s working with Plokta to capture Captain Britain’s team.

Black Knight gets his own story too, where his Ebony Blade starts to take control of him and feed a bloodlust–fueled by Plokta’s ability to grant the blade it’s greatest desire. The connection of blood to blade arouses the interest of someone…

This will tie into the next story arc involving Dracula.

By the end, the team prevails and Captain Midlands is imprisoned.

Awaiting trial, Pete Wisdom smuggles in a gun so that Midlands can kill himself.

Another terrific story about a team I never expected to enjoy reading about.
