Miles Morales will be entering the current ULTIMATE UNIVERSE with ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: INCURSION. Announced yesterday at ComicsPRO, this upcoming May comic will be a five-issue run written by some of Marvel Comics’ best current-day writers in Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar, plus will feature artwork by rising star Jonas Scharf. The comic promises to kick off what will be the beginnings of the return of the Ultimate Universe’s main villain: The Maker. Its plot line will see Miles as the only one with the key to enter The Maker’s universe, and when his baby sister, Billie, uses it to the Ultimate Universe, Miles must go in to save her–where he’ll meet the Spider-dad version of Peter Parker, the Ultimate Line’s Spider-Man.
Now, Marvel’s been teasing this crossover since last December’s TIMESLIDE, and it’s rather poetic to feature Miles as the one to lead, not just because of his world-switching adventures but also because he was probably the most important thing to come out of the original Ultimate Universe. For those unfamiliar, the original Ultimate Universe’s comics ended in its major Secret Wars event in 2016, which saw a few characters be infused into Earth-616. Since then, the Ultimate brand had gone largely untouched until Marvel reintroduced a new Ultimates Comics line last year. It’s been a major hit with fans in adapting new takes on Spider-Man, Black Panther, The Avengers, the X-Men, and Wolverine. Naturally, because Miles Morales is one of Marvel’s most popular characters featured throughout the entire Marvel franchise line, it makes a lot of sense for him to be leading the crossover as the character, along with Spider-Gwen, are already frequent universe-switchers. Plus, if we’re speaking strictly business, Miles trends really well with Gen Z and has already been in hit Spider-Verse films, along with many well-acclaimed comics in the past decade and change.
“It’s a pleasure, and a privilege, to get to be part of the Ultimate Universe’s first crossover, along with Cody and Jonas, and to play in the Spider-sandbox for the first time,” Camp said. “I’ve had a great time writing not just Miles, but a couple of other Spider characters folks might be familiar with! To get to explore the different corners of the Marvel universe through Miles’ eyes, and further develop characters we’ve introduced in Ultimates—well, it’s going to be a series full of rich characters, big firsts, and big swings!”
“It’s hard to put into words just how excited I am to bring Miles back towards the universe that started my love for super hero comics as well as the place that Miles originated,” Ziglar shared. “Deniz and co. have done some incredible stuff in the new Ultimate line and I’m excited to finally get a chance to have Miles confront being a kid born of two different worlds.”
