“A Nest Of Serpents – Part Three: Power And Influence”

A life debt is a powerful thing to hold over anyone’s head. To have such an obligation, even for one such as “Amra Of Akbatana”, can take a lifetime to repay. Fortunately for Conan, his savior is tasked with destroying the voice of Set, Thoth-Amon. It is time to repay that debt!

Zula, the shapeshifting Kushite warrior of the western grasslands, has tasked Conan with infiltrating the innermost sanctum of Set. Together they must unravel a plot threatening the whole region with unending war. Conan agrees to help, but both men are foreigners to Stygia. They will not exactly “fit in” among the priests and guards who occupy the temple complex. No simple wardrobe change will suffice. Or, will it?

How will Zula disguise himself for deliberation with Thoth-Amon? Can they save Princess Livia from a lifetime of slavery? Does the reputation of Athyr-Bast precede her? Collect the series to find out!

“Stygia: Land Of Sinister Sorcery And Dark Mystery, Part Two”

In this installment, Jeffrey Shanks covers the prehistoric ancestors of the Stygian people. From monstrous primates, to carnivorous snake-men, the foundation of Hyboria’s oldest civilization is very complex. For a complete overview of Robert E. Howard’s most infamous land of mystery, get a copy of Conan the Barbarian #23 for your collection before it’s too late.

Review

Zula, the man, the woman, the enigma, is one of the more sporadic characters to grace a Conan the Barbarian comic book. Originally created for the Marvel Comics series in the 1970s, Roy Thomas, John Buscema, and Ernie Chan would eventually see their creation adapted to the live action film Conan the Destroyer (1984). Played by actress Grace Jones, her breakout role would go on to inspire writer Jim Zub to combine both versions of the character into this new and improved Zula.

I love the direction Titan Comics is taking by cross-referencing both the main series, the magazine edition, and possibly future novelized versions of the franchise. Things are heating up as the Sons of Set prepare for war. I give this issue four out of five stars.
