The following contains spoilers for Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #2, on sale next month from Titan Comics
As we noted in our recent review of Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #1, one of the things that is so great about the Dark Souls games in general, and something that the comic book adaptations from Titan Comics have picked up on is that the game doesn't hold your hand. It provides all the information you need, but you have to piece it together yourself.
Similarly, the comic book tells a fascinating tale of a sad order of knights who are desperately trying to cling to SOMEthing to believe in as the darkness overtakes them all, but it doesn't spell it all out for them. In a CBR exclusive preview of Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #2, from writer George Mann, artist Maan House, colorist Steve Canon, and letterer Andworld Design, we see a similar approach, as the knights have to figure out what's going on with the "hollowing" of their cohorts.

BUILDING ON THE ACCLAIMED HIT VIDEO GAME DARK SOULS! Hope is a fleeting feeling for the Knights of Mourning. But the knightly order are willing to bet everything on their last chance of salvation. In search of a hero to rekindle the flame, these knights turn to the Mother of Lilies, a soulless mummified saint with legends about her ability to restore balance to the world. The knights believe that her lost soul will resurrect her and bring them their sought-after champion to guide them to solace. But madness looms in every knight’s mind and this long-awaited goal might not be what it once seemed… From the same creative team behind the 2025 SCRIBE AWARD-NOMINATED series… DARK SOULS: THE WILLOW KING.
In the preview pages, we see the group of the knights from the Mother of Mourning, Lucadeus, Stenn, and Grathin, as they go on their mission to find the lost soul of the Mother of Lillies, with the idea being that if she was reunited with her body, then she would bring back the fire, and restore the order to its former glory.
Well, as we see here, as they reach the Mausoleum of Gaith, they are faced off against Hollows. Hollows are familiar figures in the Dark Souls games, as every time you die, you get a bit more "hollowed" out, until you are a zombie. Here, the knights face off against some outright zombies.
They face them valiantly, and in some violent (but well-depicted) action. Then, though, they meet some of their former cohorts, and realize that the "Hollowing" is happening to their former friends, as well, and they are becoming hollowed out. They're not OUTRIGHT zombies just yet, but as they lose their humanity, that's precisely what will happen.
To find out how Lucadeus and his fellow knights deal with this, you'll have to pick up a copy of Dark Souls: Mother of Mourning #2 when it comes out on January 7th.
