A key member of the Justice League is about to have a dangerous reunion with an obscure DC supervillain.

While the titular hero of Aquaman #3 is still reeling from his recent trip through space and escape from a horrifying prison alongside the long-lost Atlantean hero known as Arion, far more nefarious forces are working to claim his power for themselves. Or rather, they are working to claim Aquaman in his entirety for themselves. As it turns out, one of Aquaman's oldest and most obscure foes has returned, and now that the hero has been captured, it is only a matter of time before he becomes Dagon's next living vessel.

First glimpsed in part all the way back in 1965's Justice League of America #35 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, the dreaded Dagon is easily one of the most obscure villains in the entire DC Comics mythos. Even in his first appearance, it was only Dagon's costume that was animated by a band of malevolent demons, as were the costumes of several other classic villains such as the Pied Piper and Killer Moth. It wasn't until the release of 1993's Who's Who in the DC Universe #2 that Dagon's story was expanded, making it clear he wielded hydrokinetic powers in battle against Aquaman.

In the current, Prime Earth continuity of the DC Universe, Dagon is an almost equally enigmatic figure, one understood to be an ancient surface king who sought to control Atlantis and all the seas through the use of a magical amulet imbued with demonic abilities. Because of these powers, Dagon's mental state deteriorated to the point where his own people turned against their king. Following Dagon's murder at the hands of his subjects, the only real mantion of him became the name of the City of Dagon, an Atlantean nation founded by the villainous Ocean Master where any and all Atlantean mutants and outcasts could live in relative peace.

After Darkseid was seemingly destroyed during a battle with the Justice League Unlimited, various supernatural anomalies began cropping up all over the globe. When Aquaman went to investigate one of these that had emerged at the bottom of the ocean, it led to the disappearance of Atlantis in its entirety, and when his search continued on, Aquaman himself was displaced to a whole new world, all while the rest of his Justice League teammates were helpless to do anything but watch on in horror and wonder where exactly he went.
