The following contains major spoilers for "A Magician Walks Into a Universe" from Batman/Deadpool #1, on sale now from DC and Marvel Comics.
DC Comics has finally named their very own Sorcerer Supreme, and they are far from Marvel Comics' Doctor Strange.
"A Magician Walks Into a Universe" (by James Tynion IV, Joshua Williamson, Scott Snyder, Hayden Sherman, Mike Spicer, and Frank Cvetkovic, from the pages of Batman/Deadpool #1) brings readers to Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, where an unwanted visitor has made his way inside despite any and all mystical defenses. As it turns out, this intruder is none other than John Constantine, who is more than happy to proclaim himself his own reality's Sorcerer Supreme if it helps smooth things over with Doctor Strange.
Introduced in the pages of 1985's Swamp Thing #37 by Alan Moore and Rick Veitch, the always cunning and frequently callous John Constantine has long been considered one of the DC Universe's most powerful mages. Of course, this status is belied by his unkempt and unfriendly demeanor, which has proven to be as much of a boon as his mystical prowess on countless occasions.
Since his debut, John Constantine has been a key part of various storylines and comic book events, as well as an indelible part of teams ranging from the Justice League Dark to the Sinestro Corps to the newly formed Justice League Unlimited. Constantine has also made his near untouchable status well known time and time again by not just surviving, but thriving in some of the worst circumstances imaginable.
While the mantle of the Sorcerer Supreme has long been associated with Doctor Strange, to the point that the two are effectively synonymous with one another, Strange himself hasn't been recognized as such in the pages of Marvel Comics for nearly two years. Back in 2024, Doctor Strange was forced to bequeath his mantle as Sorcerer Supreme to the dreaded Doctor Doom during the events of Marvel Comics' Blood Hunt, which saw a vampiric army nearly take over the entire world.
Since then, Doctor Doom has wielded the mantle and powers of the Sorcerer Supreme to truly horrifying effect, primarily by using them to usher in his reign as supreme ruler of Earth as seen in the recently concluded One World Under Doom event. Thankfully, Doctor Doom's rule over the planet was relatively short-lived, and his sacrifice has paved the way for someone who could be the greatest Sorcerer Supreme of all time.
Marvel Comics Has A New Sorcerer Supreme
Image via Marvel StudiosWith Doctor Doom's apparent demise, it is Wanda Maximoff, better known as the Scarlet Witch, who is set to take on his former mantle as the next Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. Wanda will step into her new role in the pages of the upcoming Sorcerer Supreme series by writer Steve Orlando and artist Bernard Chang.
The official solicit synopsis for Sorcerer Supreme #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "After rescuing the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto from the ashes of Doom's fall, the SCARLET WITCH has chosen to claim a new title: SORCERER SUPREME OF EARTH! Wanda is willing to defy tradition, break every rule and chart a bold new path-one that the Vishanti aren't exactly happy about. Will this rogue Sorcerer Supreme bring magic in the Marvel Universe to new heights, or leave it in ruin? An all-new series helmed by Steve Orlando with mystifying art from Bernard Chang!"
