The following contains major spoilers for Absolute Batman #3, on sale now from DC Comics.
DC's Absolute Batman is backing down from his fight against Gotham's biggest threat, and he's doing it for a fortune.
Absolute Batman #3 finds the titular hero diving deep into his investigation of the Party Animals gang that has torn a path of destruction through Gotham City. Thanks to his contacts, Bruce Wayne has managed to uncover more about the Party Animals and their leader than he ever could have alone, including that the masks they wear put them in direct contact with the man behind it all — Black Mask. Surprisingly, when Bruce uses this same tech to contact Black Mask, he isn't met with any sort of threat. Instead, the villain offers Batman a whopping $200 million to help fund his war on crime, and all he has to do to get it is stop protecting the city he loves for an entire week.

Although Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask, is a relatively recent addition to the Dark Knight's rogues gallery compared to other, similarly infamous Batman villains, he has found himself a special place in the hearts and minds of fans right alongside the likes of the Joker and Penguin. Introduced in the pages of 1985's Batman #386 by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrak, Roman grew up in an affluent household where he was raised by neglectful, often clueless parents. This, coupled with his intense, near-obsessive hatred for the Waynes, drove Roman to murder his parents by burning his family home down with them inside, leaving him with their fortune and no one to hold him back.
Unsurprisingly, Roman's ambitions far exceeded his competency, and he soon enough ran his family's business empire into the ground. In a moment of personal crisis, Roman took up the mantle of Black Mask before turning his attentions towards the criminal underworld rather than any legitimate business endeavors. Where Roman once utterly failed, the Black Mask was wildly successful, and soon enough he had established himself as one of Gotham City's most prominent gang lords.

A Terrifying Superman Villain Has Just Been Unleashed from DC’s Darkest Realm
One of the most terrifying villains in the Superman mythos has finally been unleashed upon the DC Universe, and he has his sights set on all of it.
The Absolute Universe's Black Mask is just the latest of countless characters to have been reimagined for the brutalist reality they call their home. While this version of Roman Sionis is an infinitely more successful iteration of the character, the Absolute Batman has been operating with barely a shred of the resources that most versions of the Dark Knight have at their disposal. Rather than running his operations out of a massive cave hidden beneath a sprawling manor, this Bruce Wayne has set up shop in the tunnels that Gotham City forgot, all while building his own weapons and accouterments out of whatever supplies he can scrounge up in his spare time.

Batman
Batman is one of the oldest comic superheroes, with nearly a century of comics, TV-shows, films, and video games. The mild-mannered Bruce Wayne becomes Gotham City's caped crusader, protecting it from villains like The Joker, Killer Croc, The Penguin, and more. Batman is also one of DC comics' "Big Three" alongside Superman and Wonder Woman, and together the three help keep the earth safe as founding members of the Justice League.
