The mantle of the Red Hood stretches all the way back to 1951's Detective Comics #168, which introduced the character in its opening story, "The Man Behind the Red Hood!" by Bill Finger, Lew Sayre Schwartz, and Win Mortimer. The story not only established the Red Hood as a concept, but also as the Joker's former alter-ego, which was partly responsible for helping him survive the acid that turned him into the Clown Prince of Crime in the first place.

The Jason Todd who would become the Red Hood made his comic book debut as the second Robin in 1986's Batman #401 by Barbara Kesel and Trevor von Eeden. After a somewhat lackluster career as the Boy Wonder, Jason Todd was subjected to an infamously cruel and gruesome demise at the hands of the Joker.

Jason's death itself was set in motion by fans as a result of one of the worst (or best) ad campaigns in comic book history, during which fans cemented Jason's death by calling in their votes. And, while this did seem to provide a permanent end to the character's comic book career, that all changed nearly two decades later.

Shortly after the events of the original Hush storyline, Jason Todd made his return, this time in the form of the new Red Hood. Having been resurrected due to Superboy-Prime's interference with the timeline, discovered by members of the League of Assassins, and trained in their ranks by Talia al Ghul, Jason was given the perfect opportunity to redefine himself and his legacy.

Since then, Jason has had multiple run-ins with the Joker, yet rarely if ever has he been given the kind of opportunity that DC K.O. has presented him. Not only does Jason have the chance to face off against the Joker without interference, the only way to win this fight is by dealing a lethal blow. Couple with the fact that the threat of Darkseid looms just overhead, and DC K.O. might just be exactly what the Red Hood has been in search of for years.

DC K.O.: Red Hood vs. The Joker #1 is on sale now from DC Comics.

The Justice League, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter, pose together on the Justice League of America Vol. 1 comic cover.
