Gotham's next Dark Knight is exactly who it should be, even if they are Batman's biggest problem.

In a preview of DC K.O.: Knightfight #2 (by Joshua Williamson, Dan Mora, Tríona Farrell, and Tom Napolitano) from DC Comics, readers pick up with Batman shortly after being transported to a futuristic Gotham City filled with Robins all out for vengeance. Worse still, these Robins are being led by none other than Dick Grayson, who has taken up Bruce's old mantle in the wake of his disappearance and has nothing good in mind for the original Dark Knight.

Introduced all the way back in 1940 in Bill Finger and Bob Kane's opening story from Detective Comics #38, Dick Grayson was the very first Robin that Batman took under his wing. Formerly a member of the Flying Grayson acrobat troupe, Dick found a new home with Bruce after his parents were murdered during an appearance at Haley's Circus. Over the decades that followed, Dick became a Caped Crusader in his own right, so much so that he eventually stepped out of Batman's shadow and embarked upon his own career as Nightwing.

Grayson even had the opportunity to become Batman once already, following Bruce's disappearance back in 2009 during the events of DC Comics' "Batman Reborn" event. At the time, Bruce was believed to be dead following his apparent demise during Final Crisis. While Bruce was in fact still alive, Dick and Damien Wayne did everything they could to keep his mantle alive by operating as Batman and Robin in his stead.

Bruce was displaced to the futuristic Gotham City seen in DC K.O.: Knightfight after suffering yet another apparent demise, this time at the hands of the Joker during the initial rush at the outset of DC's ongoing battle royale. Rather than dying, however, Batman had outfitted his suit with Boom Tube tech that would pull him from the action in the event of any catastrophic failure or injury. Unfortunately, rather than returning to the home he knows, Batman was dropped into the middle of a Gotham he hardly recognizes, and which has no place left for him.

DC K.O. stands as the latest major event that will determine the fate of the DC Universe as a whole. As explained by series writer Scott Snyder, DC K.O. is "a knock-down, drag-out fight between all your favorite DC Super Heroes in a cosmic tournament to save the universe from Darkseid."

"Darkseid has evolved into something bigger and stronger than ever... There's no future for the DC Universe because of what he's done—the heroes' only shot is to stop him in the present... You have to be merciless to win, and when you're out, you’re out."

DC K.O.: Knightfight #2 is on sale now from DC Comics.

The cover to Batman issue #1 depicts Bruce Wayne as Batman and Dick Grayson as Robin swinging through Gotham City.
