DC Comics and Alex Ross are giving fans a set of brand-new connecting variants to celebrate the return of one of the best Big Two crossovers of all time.
In a press release from DC Comics, fans got their first look at legendary artist Alex Ross' new connecting variant covers set to grace the upcoming reprints of JLA/Avengers #3 and Avengers/JLA #4. The first of these features Earth's Mightiest Heroes rushing into battle, while the latter showcases the Justice League at the ready to face off against their counterparts from another Multiverse.
Marvel and DC Comics are Bringing Back One of the Best Comic Book Crossovers of All Time
The classic JLA/Avengers crossover was originally published in 2003 and marked the culmination of efforts that had been going on for the better part of two decades. Written by the legendary Kurt Busiek and illustrated by industry icon George Pérez, the latter of whom was already attached to a similar project that never made it to full production, JLA/Avengers and Avengers/JLA played out across four issues and saw the heroes of the Marvel and DC Universes racing against time to save both of their respective worlds.
The upcoming reprints of the series were revealed back in March, and come as the latest in what is currently an ever-expanding line of similar titles, not to mention a chance to revisit a genuinely incredible and often hard-to-find title. The official solicit synopsis for JLA/Avengers from Marvel and DC Comics reads, "It's the grandest Marvel and DC Comics crossover of them all and an icon-packed event decades in the making!"
"After years of anticipation, JLA/AVENGERS reunited acclaimed writer Kurt Busiek (Marvels) with his AVENGERS collaborator George Pérez – an artistic legend for both companies – to assemble every single member of Earth's Mightiest and the World’s Greatest in one blockbuster book!" The solicit synopsis continues, "Universes collide as the Justice League fights the towering Terminus and the Avengers face the awesome menace of Starro! Each team must undertake an epic quest on the other’s world, with the fate of both realities in the balance!"
2026 Has Been A Great Year For Marvel and DC Comics Crossover Events
Image via DC ComicsIn April, fans got the chance to celebrate both of their favorite comic book universes with the release of Spider-Man/Superman #1, the follow-up to this year's previous comic book crossover anthology one-shot, Superman/Spider-Man #1. Like last year's Deadpool/Batman and Batman/Deadpool, each of these new issues featured various stories from some of the best writers and artists of today, each of which had its own unique pairing of DC and Marvel Comics characters.
Along the way, these crossovers have given rise to all manner of new versions of fans' favorite characters. While last year saw Logo, the twisted mash-up of Wolverine and Lobo from the not-so-long-lost Amalgam Universe make his debut, this year saw the Man of Steel get the chance to not only stare down the Venom symbiote, but wield its power for himself.
JLA/Avengers #1 from Marvel Comics arrives in comic book stores everywhere this May.
