Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.

He doesn't miss, and DC Comics feels as if that will again be the case when Deadshot finally returns to comic book shelves this year in an all-new, well, one-shot. Many casual superhero moviegoers know of the character only from DC Studios' The Suicide Squad franchise, but he has long been one of the best ever penned and long before he was portrayed by Academy Award-winner Will Smith.

So, what's up Deadshot's very accurate arms as of late? Something special, it appears. DC Comics is all set to bring him back for fans with Next Level: One Shot in August 2026, and with a new storyline in tow, to boot — written by the great Gerry Duggan.

Per the official release: "In Next Level: One Shot, DC’s deadliest assassin goes to the Next Level and uncovers a conspiracy that will change everything. Duggan and Blanco tell the tale of a job gone sideways, a father and his daughter, and a web of super-powered lies that stretches throughout the entire DC Next Level cast of characters…and points in the direction of war on the horizon. This epic issue tells you everything you need to know about what’s next for Next Level…if you survive the experience."

The 48-page special isn't exactly interested in pulling punches, or rather, holding bullets, in the highly-anticipated return of Deadshot.

To that point, they've thrown the kitchen sink at the Next Level series as a whole, promising "bold new directions" from a slew of familiar faces that include (inhales deeply, Ace Ventura style) Batman, Lobo, the Doom Patrol, Teen Titans, Jonah Hex, Deadman, Barbara Gordon, the Legion of Super-Heroes, Firestorm, the Demon, Zatanna and Deathstroke (exhales).

That very welcomed laundry list of superheroes is being matched by the list of creators involved with Next Level.

The release lists them as the following: "Jeff Lemire, Jamal Campbell, Hayden Sherman, Mariko Tamaki, Rafael De Latorre, Greg Rucka, Tony Fleecs, James Harren, Martín Morazzo, Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez, Michael Walsh, W. Maxwell Prince, Jorge Corona, Kyle Higgins, DaNi, Daniele Di Nicuolo, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Skottie Young, Amancay Nahuelpan, Joshua Williamson, and others."

Count on Next Level: One Shot to be the first of several DC Next Level storylines DC Comics promises to unveil over the next several months, as they try to establish the 2026 calendar year as one of their best ever — while James Gunn attempts to do the same for DC Studios.

The Suicide Squad and Joker (Jared Leto) are assembled on what looks like a spray-painted green and purple skull face on the poster for Suicide Squad (2016).
