The Daisy Ridley-led Star Wars movie is reportedly on hold again as Lucasfilm shifts its attention to other upcoming films. This delay is actually welcome news for many fans who have questioned Disney’s handling of the Star Wars franchise. The Rey Skywalker story, tentatively titled “New Jedi Order,” was set to be directed by feminist activist Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but the project is now on the backburner while other films like Shawn Levy’s “Starfighter” and James Mangold’s “Dawn of the Jedi” move ahead.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman shared an update, saying, “The Rey movie is on hold once again, as both the Shawn Levy and James Mangold Star Wars films are moving forward first. The project is not canceled — just temporarily on hold.” Given Lucasfilm’s history of creative changes and delays, this outcome is not surprising. The studio has cycled through several writers for “New Jedi Order,” including Damon Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson, Steven Knight, and most recently George Nolfi. Each change has pushed the project further down the schedule.
Daisy Ridley addressed the delays earlier this year, expressing optimism that taking more time with the script would benefit the final film. She said, “People have talked about it a lot that the release date often affects films and how quickly things go into production. So the freedom to make sure that this script is the best way to tell this story is wonderful, and I don’t think any fans would want it to be rushed. The wait will be worth it. I know what George [Nolfi] is working on, and he is a phenomenal writer. So I’m really looking forward to reading it, and yes, it’s all worthwhile.”
While “New Jedi Order” remains uncertain, Ridley is expected to return for another Star Wars project. Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy featuring characters from the sequel saga. For now, the delay of a Rey-led film is a positive development for those who believe Disney has struggled to manage Star Wars wisely and that another movie focused on Rey was not the best direction for the franchise.
