Marvel Comics' "Eight Deaths of Spider-Man" event revolves around a long-standing feud of sorts between Doctor Strange and Cyttorak, the demonic entity who provides the unstoppable Juggernaut his power. As it turns out, one of Doctor Strange's most important jobs as the Sorcerer Supreme was taking part in regular confrontations with the Scions of Cyttorak. Throughout these battles, Doctor Strange stood as the first and last line of defense against not just Cyttorak himself, but against the undying Blight that has already torn entire realities asunder.

While Doctor Strange would normally deal with the Scions of Cyttorak for himself, the events of Marvel Comics' recently concluded Blood Hunt event ensured that he would not longer be able to provide such services. During the attempted vampire takeover of Earth, Doctor Strange was bitten, leaving his consciousness and astral form to watch on in horror as his physical body acted on its own rabid impulses. In order to stave off Varnae's vampiric army and part the Darkforce shroud blacking out the skies, Doctor Strange was forced to cede his mantle as Sorcerer Supreme of Earth to one of his most loathed enemies - Doctor Doom.

Now that Doctor Doom is the Sorcerer Supreme, the task of standing firm in the face of Cyttorak and his Scions is Doom's alone. Or rather, it would be if not for the fact that Doom is free to choose any champion he deems worthy. As such, Doctor Doom chose Spider-Man to stand as Earth's Champion in the face of the Scions of Cyttorak, though not without some help. Rather than leaving Peter Parker to his own devices in the face of such steep competition, Doom gave him a mystically empowered Spider-Man suit, as well as eight Reeds of Raggadorr, each of which is capable of resurrecting him from one of the many deaths he is sure to experience.
