The upcoming Superman movie is set to be one of the biggest blockbusters of 2025. There’s a lot of anticipation (and cautious curiosity) surrounding the film, which looks like it will translate into interest in the character’s comic books. DC Comics knows this and is taking advantage of it accordingly with the Summer of Superman publishing initiative.

Summer of Superman will create entry points into the Superman Family of comics. Through this, new and lapsed readers can easily jump on and, hopefully, satisfy their Superman itch in the lead-up and after the movie’s release.

What is Summer of Superman?

Summer of Superman is a DC Comics publishing initiative to create new readers from the interest in the upcoming Superman film. Under the Summer of Superman banner, they’ll publish several jumping-on points for Superman and associated characters. Many of these will be new comic book series, others will be fresh entry points for existing titles, and there will be a pair of standalone graphic novels too.

Summer of Superman Special #1

Told by the current Superman architects, Summer of Superman Special is an oversized one-shot comic. It’s set at John Henry Irons (Steel) and Lana Lang’s wedding, with the wider Superman cast present. However, there are some trouble brewing that will need the Superman Family to save the special day.

Summer of Superman sets the scene for future Superman stories – especially those set in the core DC Universe like Superman (2023 series), Superman Unlimited, and more. Check out this one-shot if you’re curious about reading any of these comics.

Action Comics, the title that originally debuted Superman all the way back in 1938, has been going through its own publishing practice called Superman called Superman Superstars. This brings all-star creators together to tell self-contained Superman tales. Action Comics #1085-1086 by Ms. Marvel co-creator G. Willow Wilson and artist Gavin Guidry winds up Superman Superstars while also being part of Summer of Superman.

In this tale, Superman is sent to the Arctic to investigate a new technology that promises to stop global warming. However, he discovers that the scientific outpost housing the technology has been taken over by a supervillain.

Action Comics #1085 will be published on 9th April.

Superman #25

The 25th issue of the current Superman title is an oversized bonanza. It celebrates the last two years’ stories on the title, connects itself to the Summer of Superman Special, and sets up a new storyline. This includes the return of Lex Luthor, who has returned after having his memory erased in the House of Brainiac event. He’s back and DC Comics is promising a big reveal relating to it.

Don’t worry that Superman #25 looks back on the previous 24 issues. This appears to be done so it can push forward with new tales in future issues. You can also use the comic as an indicator if you want to go back and check out earlier stories in the run.

This middle-grade graphic novel is a fun team-up story, which sees Superman join forces with Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) and Hawkgirl. The twist is that they’re all eight years old, so they’re all still learning to use their powers and be themselves.

Superman’s Good Guy Gang will cater for younger readers looking for a Superman fix.
