EXCLUSIVE: Thanos Helps Set Up Thor's Death

1 month ago 10

Recently, Marvel shocked the comics world by suggesting that an upcoming storyline in Immortal Thor will result in the death of Thor (an ironic turn of events for a book titled Immortal Thor). Of course, this is Al Ewing we are talking about here, so there are certainly many different ways that this story could still go, but Ewing has been teasing that Thor might perish at the hands of the Utgard-gods (powerful ancient beings who make up the Elder gods, so older and more powerful versions of Thor, Loki, etc.) for some time now, and if that happens, he will first have to deal with Skurge the Executioner and Thanos (maybe?) in this CBR exclusive preview of next week's Immortal Thor #21.

Immortal Thor #21 is from the aforementioned Al Ewing, artist Jan Bazaldúa, colorist Matt Hollingsworth, and letterer Joe Sabino, and it picks up where last issue left off, with Thor on the way to a gate that will take him to Utgard, to face off against the ultra-powerful Utagard-Loki and other Elder Gods, but as it turns out, Skurge wants to take Thor's place.

Thor’s Worst Enemies Have a Horrifying New Mission

The most powerful enemies that the God of Thunder has ever faced have set their sights on Asgard, and there is no chance of stopping their arrival.

In the preview pages, Thor and Skurge battle, as it is unclear what Skurge's motives are here precisely. Skurge famously took Thor's place when helping the Thunder God save a group of humans trapped in Hel, and his motives there were pure, but it is unclear what his plan is here, as he perhaps thinks that whoever goes through the gate will have a GOOD fate.

Meanwhile, Thanos taunts Thor through his thoughts, leading Thor to wonder whether it is actually the real Thanos, or just a manifestation of Thanos in Thor's mind. This leads to a hilarious bit where Thor asks Skurge to look behind him to see if Thanos IS there, and Skurge thinks Thor is just trying the oldest trick in the book.

Whether Thanos is for real, and what role he has in Thor's possibly impending death will be revealed next week in Immortal Thor #21.
