From Passion to Resurrection: Mel Gibson’s Next Epic to Start Filming in August

Mel Gibson, the acclaimed filmmaker and actor, is gearing up to begin production on The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited sequel to his 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ. This follow-up will focus on the resurrection of Jesus, a cornerstone of Christian faith, and is set to start filming in August at Rome’s iconic Cinecittà Studios.

Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ was a groundbreaking portrayal of the final hours of Jesus’ life, earning $612 million globally and becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. Now, more than two decades later, Gibson is returning to this sacred narrative with renewed ambition. Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of Cinecittà Studios, confirmed that the production will require extensive sets and soundstages. “I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August,” she told an Italian newspaper.

In an interview with Joe Rogan, Gibson shared his vision for the sequel. He revealed that the film would explore vast spiritual dimensions, including “the fall of the angels” and realms like hell and Sheol. “I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels,” Gibson said. He admitted that crafting such a narrative without veering into cliché would be a challenge but expressed determination: “It’s not going to be easy… But I’ll take a crack at it because that’s what you’ve got to do, right?”

Jim Caviezel, who delivered a powerful performance as Jesus in The Passion, will reprise his role. However, given that 20 years have passed since the first film’s release, Gibson plans to use digital de-aging techniques to portray Caviezel as he appeared in 2004. Maia Morgenstern (Mary) and Francesco De Vito (Saint Peter) are also expected to return.

Gibson’s approach to storytelling has always been bold and deeply personal. With The Resurrection of the Christ, he seems poised to deliver another powerful exploration of divine grace and redemption—a story that resonates deeply with believers worldwide.
