The world is waiting with bated breath for the eventual release of Grand Theft Auto VI, and has been for years, but the latest delay to Nov. 19, 2026 means fans of the famed franchise might begin running out of air soon — given the hype surrounding the game. In the meantime, the GTA writer is hoping to keep the attention of fans in another way.
Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, also the mind behind not only Grand Theft Auto but also the equally legendary Red Dead Redemption franchise, is bringing a new creation to the marketplace. In conjunction with Dark Horse Comics and Absurd Ventures comes the American Caper series, and it does sound intriguing.
Houser recently took to the main stage at Los Angeles Comic-Con to explain what fans can expect from American Caper, and what motivated him to create it in the midst of the ongoing production for what will ultimately be one of the most anticipated games of all-time in Grand Theft Auto VI.
“I love doing crime comedy and having done lots of stories about carjackers or people who had to be tough, wanted to tell a story about some degenerate criminals from a completely different perspective and a completely different part of the world. American Caper is about small town, suburban, 'successful’ people. One is a happily-married-ish lawyer, the other is happily married, in his mind, property developer. Both have made terrible mistakes and their lives go very awry.”

Grand Theft Auto Delayed, American Caper Displayed

“We wanted to make something that gazes into the cracked mirror of the American Dream. Working in comics lets us tell a crime drama that is a gritty, satirical dark comedy without restraint. American Caper is a collision of bad choices, broken people, monetized misery, synthetic sugar, dogs fed donuts, maniacs, shady land developers and grown men aging badly by pretending to be cowboys.”
The American Caper series is already on its way to you with Issue #1 releasing Nov. 12, 2025, the main cover done by Tyler Boss with variants from Simon Bisley, Martin Simmonds, Joe Quinones and Marguerite Sauvage. And while the demand has already resulted in Issue #1 being sold out online, local comic book shops are waiting to pull one for every GTA and RDR fan who knows what Houser is capable of — so grab one and decide for yourself if it lives up to expectations!
