South Korean author Baek Se-hee, best known for her bestselling memoir I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki, has died at the age of 35.
Originally published in 2018, Baek’s memoir gained worldwide acclaim for its raw, introspective look at depression and mental health. The book, which compiles real conversations between Baek and her psychiatrist, resonated deeply with readers for its honesty and relatability. Its English translation, released in 2022, sold more than one million copies and has been translated into 25 languages.
According to the Korean Organ Donation Agency, Baek donated her heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys, helping to save five lives. Her sister said Baek “wanted to share her heart with others through her work, and to inspire hope.”
Baek’s translator, Anton Hur, paid tribute on Instagram, writing that while her organs saved five people, “her readers will know she touched millions more with her writing.”
A sequel, I Want to Die but I Still Want to Eat Tteokbokki, was published in Korea in 2019 and released in English earlier this year.
Baek’s death marks the loss of a vital literary voice whose work helped destigmatize conversations about mental health and gave comfort to readers around the world.
