Blood Moon Comics has become the most recent casualty of Diamond Comic Distributors Inc.'s bankruptcy. As Diamond seeks a new buyer, the indie publisher is suspending all its operations until further notice.

The announcement arrives via Blood Moon Comics President and CEO Keith Rommel. The company will not publish any new comics for now and has suspended all social media activity. Blood Moon's e-commerce store is now closed, and all its remaining inventory is being transferred to Sunbury Press to sell in its online store or otherwise disposed of. Rommel addressed the creators who publish their work through the company, explaining the reason for the shutdown. "I want to personally thank you for all the hard work and risk involved in publishing through our start-up," he stated. "We were beginning our fourth year in business when the news hit about Diamond."

EXCLUSIVE: Dark Horse to Publish Alex Vede's Work in English for First Time

Dark Horse Comics will publish Spanish comic book creator Alex Vede's original graphic novel, Riptide, in English for the first time.

The Blood Moon Comics chief continued, "Unfortunately, we are left with tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid invoices from them. We will be pursuing what we can from their bankruptcy actions. Even if another entity purchases Diamond, there is no guarantee any of the amounts due will be settled. This is a real shame! Your creative work was world-class, and the company was beginning to develop a following. Now, we will put things on hold pending the resolution of Diamond's bankruptcy or potential purchase."

In the meantime, Sunbury Press's accounting department is doing a full audit of Blood Moon's titles to ensure all invoices were properly submitted and to reconcile any royalties owed to creators. Creators are advised to check the Sunbury Press store a few weeks after it accounts for all inventory. Those who wish to purchase some or all of their remaining copies will have to reach out to the Sunbury Press Store.

The Fallout From Diamond Comic Distributors' Bankruptcy Continues

As has already been predicted by many, Diamond Comic Distributors' present predicament will leave many smaller independent publishers twisting in the wind. The company's relatively open submissions policy allowed small press publishers and creators to submit their titles directly to the Diamond purchasing team. Like Blood Moon Comics, where many comic creators first break into the industry, many other smaller presses, including Band of Bards, Blackbox, and Antarctic Press, may soon also find themselves in dire straits.

Comic industry observers hope that the impending sale of Diamond Comic Distributors, which currently reportedly has a respectable number of suitors, will help stop the bleeding and get smaller publishers back on track, even though it may be too late for Blood Moon Comics.
