DC Studios co-head James Gunn compares the upcoming DCU Supergirl film to one of his biggest superhero hits.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn described Supergirl as a "space adventure." Gunn went on to state that Supergirl is "like Guardians," referencing the 2014 Marvel Cinematic Universe hit Guardians of the Galaxy, which Gunn directed from a screenplay co-written alongside Nicole Perlman. Not only was Guardians of the Galaxy a massive financial success, grossing more than $773 million at the box office against a budget of less than $200 million, the film garnered rave reviews from both critics and audiences, earning matching 92% "Certified Fresh" and "Popcornmeter" scores via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Supergirl is currently slated to arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026, and will see Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El step into her own interstellar adventure after making her surprise feature film debut in Superman starring David Corenswet. While Supergirl was nowhere to be seen during the majority of the film, her lovable and loyal hound Krypto the Superdog took center stage at numerous points. During a post-credits sequence, audiences got to see Alcock stumble into her Kryptonian cousin's Fortress of Solitude in search of Krypto while still recovering from whatever took place the night before.

Alongside Alcock herself, Supergirl will feature a tight ensemble cast including David Krumholtz as Kara's father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother Alura In-Ze, Eve Ridley as the vengeful young alien Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as the dreaded Krem of the Yellow HIlls. The film will largely pull from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely's 2021 miniseries, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which was lauded for offering a decidedly different kind of superhero story than what readers are used to seeing. Supergirl will also mark Jason Momoa's next outing as a DC Comics icon, this time in the form of the cosmic bounty hunter Lobo.

Supergirl writer Ana Noguiera recently opened up about her experience not just crafting the screenplay for the film, but figuring out who Kara Zor-El is as a character. Noguiera recalled pouring over a collection of Supergirl comics, including those written by King, which imparted unto her a greater understanding of the character. "She watched Krypton completely be destroyed. I was always like, 'I can't get my head around the version of the character that is so sunny." Nogueira added, "When I read it, I was like, ‘There she is."

Supergirl is currently slated to soar into theaters on June 26, 2026.
