The following contains major spoilers for Phoenix #8, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Jean Grey has just unleashed a whole new kind of Phoenix Force.

After transferring the powers of the Phoenix Force to the young Adani, Jean Grey finds herself transported far from the battlefield and awash in her own memories. As the ages play out before her, Jean is forced to confront the worst version of herself in the form of the Dark Phoenix. As seen in the pages of Phoenix #8, however, this battle is far from one that Jean cannot win, and after reclaiming her power across multiple fronts, she is ready to stand firm in the face of evil as something even greater than the Dark Phoenix ever was.

Jean Grey's relationship with the Phoenix Force is one that has become an indelible part of the Marvel Universe as a whole. At its outset, the Phoenix had come to Earth after feeling the pull of Jean's immense psychic power, which made her an obviously fitting host for the Cosmic Raptor. While this proved to be true for a time, the Phoenix's influence and Jean's past traumas culminated in the rise of the former's destructive self, the Dark Phoenix, which very nearly rended the entire world asunder and cost the latter her life in a bid to stave off complete and total annihilation.

In the years since, Jean has reconciled with the Phoenix Force and its place in her life, though not after numerous storylines which positioned the Cosmic Raptor as an impossibly powerful threat to the Marvel Universe at large. Among the most prominent of these is easily 2012's Avengers vs. X-Men crossover event, which saw Earth's Mightiest Heroes take a disastrous preemptive stand against the Phoenix Force's then latest trip to Earth. Rather than turning the Phoenix away, the Avengers fractured it, leading to numerous mutants being imbued with a power that corrupted them even more quickly than it had Jean Grey so many years prior.

The most ancient enemy that Wolverine has ever known is back, and he is in control of an utterly unbreakable mutant army.

More recently, Jean and the Phoenix Force have taken to the stars, specifically in the wake of the fall of Krakoa. Over the course of their journey, they have uncovered the threat of the Dark God Perrikus, who convinced his young alien protégé Adani that the Phoenix was the one responsible for the deaths of her loved ones. In turn, Adani has helped Perrikus strike out against the Phoenix in exchange for her own shot at revenge. While their efforts alone haven't done too much damage, they paved the way for an eventual team-up with Marvel's Mad Titan, Thanos, as well as the latter's own ascension to the leader of the entire Galactic Council.
