Heritage Auctions, along with Albert Moy Art and Dynamite’s Nick Barucci, have launched a new auction, selling off dozens of pieces of original art from the late comics and commercial artist John Cassaday and his friends. You can find the auction here.
The art is being sold to benefit Cassaday’s partner Tara and his sister Robin, who helped curate the pieces for sale along with Moy and Barucci. The first batch of auctions also includes donated art from friends of Cassaday’s, including Jim Lee, Liam Sharp, Paul Pope and others.
“As many know, John Cassaday was one of my best friends,” Barucci said in a statement. ” He was one of the best people I knew. Most of the comics world knows his creativity and art, which stands on its own. Others were as fortunate as myself to have been friends with John, and he was a shining light as a person as well as an artist. And for those who did not know him personally, he blessed the industry with his art, with the passion he brought to the comics he worked on. And his art will keep his flame alive forever.”
According to Barucci, Heritage Auctions is foregoing a portion of their share, charging a buyer’s premium but providing 100% of the “hammer price” to Cassaday’s family. That translates as Heritage taking their cut entirely from the buyers and allowing the family to keep their “share” of the final sale price.
The auction will also include a number of pieces chosen from Cassaday’s personal art collection, including a Marvel Fanfare cover by Michael Golden; New Frontier art by Darwyn Cooke, Russ Heath‘s Lone Ranger, Marvel Fanfare by Kerry Gammill, and Captain America art by both Gene Colan and Jack Kirby.
“The most historic and personal piece of art is the cover to Planetary #1,” Barucci explained. “This is a cover that John turned down all offers [for]. He wanted to keep it as it was his first critically-acclaimed series, his signature series. It catapulted him, and if you’ve read the series, you know why. And it’s beyond the cover to Planetary #1 cover in the auction; there are multiple covers and Planetary #1 pages, and now they are available to the fans. There are also other great Marvel, DC, Dynamite and more. From Captain America to Astonishing X-Men, Action Comics to Legion Worlds and Lone Ranger, Buck Rogers and more.
