Kirkman Gender-Flips Transformers: Female Replaces Optimus Prime

2 weeks ago 16

Robert Kirkman’s latest move in the Transformers comic line is stirring debate after longtime leader Optimus Prime stepped down and handed command to Elita-1. The change appeared in Transformers #30 from Skybound, released last week. The story ends with Optimus giving up the Matrix of Leadership, which transforms Elita-1 into Elita Prime, making her the new leader of the Autobots.

The issue confirms that Optimus abandons the “Prime” title once he relinquishes the Matrix. This marks one of the most serious shifts yet in the current Energon Universe storyline. It is not a fake death or brief leadership change. Optimus willingly steps aside after clashing with Elita over whether the Autobots should keep protecting Earth or return to their home planet, Cybertron.

Elita tells Optimus he has “lost sight of the Autobots’ real mission” by prioritizing Earth, according to coverage from Matt McGloin of CosmicBookNews. After their argument, Optimus agrees his actions may have harmed the war effort. He passes her the Matrix, triggering her transformation into Elita Prime. Some Autobots side with her and depart for Cybertron, while others stay behind with Optimus. The split leaves two factions among the Autobots and strips Optimus of the title and relic that defined him for decades.

The storyline has also touched a nerve with fans online. One commenter on X noted that if Optimus is no longer a Prime, he should go by his original name, Orion Pax. That view reflects frustration among some longtime readers who feel the writers are not respecting series continuity or are changing it for social or creative reasons unrelated to the story’s roots, although not everyone agreed.

You can tell the people who did this know nothing about Transformers because if Optimus Prime is no longer a Prime, he should be using his original name Orion Pax.

Depends on what they’re basing it on because in the original cartoon after Orion got rebuild he went by Optimus

This direction comes under the guidance of Robert Kirkman, best known for The Walking Dead and Invincible. He became a key figure in the Energon Universe after Skybound secured the Transformers and G.I. Joe licenses from Hasbro following IDW’s loss of the properties. Artist Dan Mora joined the project starting with issue #25, helping define the visual tone of the new era.

The timing is notable. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Transformers: The Movie, a milestone Hasbro is actively promoting. With Optimus Prime taking a back seat and Elita-1 stepping into command, Kirkman’s series signals a dramatic shift that could reshape the franchise’s legacy at a time when fans are watching more closely than ever.
