Lionsgate is moving full speed ahead with a follow-up to its 2025 hit The Housemaid. Deadline has confirmed that Kirsten Dunst will join Sydney Sweeney in The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. The movie is set to be directed again by Paul Feig, who returns alongside producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Feig and Laura Fischer through Pretty Dangerous Pictures, and Sweeney through her Fifty-Fifty Films label.

Screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first film, will also script the sequel. Michele Morrone will reprise his role as Enzo. Carly Elter, who helped guide the first movie under Hidden Pictures, returns as executive producer, joined by Alex Young of Hidden Pictures and Kaylee McGregor of Fifty-Fifty Films as co-producer.

The story follows Millie, played by Sweeney, as she begins work for a woman she’s forbidden to see, only to uncover dangerous secrets hidden behind a locked door. The movie is based on McFadden’s 2023 novel of the same title.

“It is a privilege to bring The Housemaid’s next chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness,” said Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “Opposite the ever-magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite as it seems.”

Chelsea Kujawa and Maria Ascanio will oversee production for Lionsgate, while Robert Melnik handled the deal for the studio.

The Housemaid became one of 2025’s biggest box office surprises, earning nearly $400 million worldwide after its holiday release. The movie’s strong performance gave Lionsgate confidence to move quickly on a sequel. Executives sought to secure Sweeney’s return while adding another major star, and after several meetings, Dunst became the clear choice. Her growing demand after the success of Roofman made her addition a major win for the studio.

Dunst, who received an Oscar nomination for her past work, recently signed on to appear in the upcoming sequel to A Minecraft Movie, set for release next June. She also stars in Ruben Östlund’s upcoming film The Entertainment System Is Down and was recently seen in Roofman and Civil War.
