Ryan Reynolds is signaling that fans may have to wait for the next chapter of Deadpool, even after the major success of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. The film brought together Reynolds and Hugh Jackman after years of buildup and delivered a strong box office run, but there has been little official news about a fourth film.
Reynolds recently confirmed he remains in regular contact with Marvel Studios and continues to develop ideas, though nothing is moving quickly. He said he maintains a strong working relationship with the studio and looks for ways to contribute creatively, even outside projects where he appears on screen.
“I’ve talked to Marvel off and on, always. We have a really great relationship, you know? It’s always a conversation. I’m always just looking to be additive and help on anything, even if it’s not a movie I’m in. And I’m always writing. I mean, it’s how I kind of get it out of my system. I love writing. That character and that world is one in which anything is possible, and that in and of itself allows for so much freedom and storytelling…I gotta say, that Marvel team, those guys have been incredible, all of them, and I’m really, really lucky to have the opportunity to work with them the way I have, as intimately as I have.”
The actor first played the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, before launching the R-rated hit Deadpool in 2016. That film helped redefine superhero movies by proving audiences would support more mature content. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, some fans worried the character would be toned down. Those concerns eased after Deadpool & Wolverine kept its edge and earned about $1.3 billion worldwide.
Despite that success, Marvel Studios is not rushing into Deadpool 4. The company is focused on major crossover films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Several former X-Men characters are expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and many assume Deadpool will show up, though Reynolds has not been officially announced.

At the same time, Marvel is developing a full X-Men reboot expected to arrive later in the decade. Director Jake Schreier is attached, and reports suggest Sadie Sink may join the franchise in Spider-Man: Brand New Day before moving into the X-Men story. The reboot is rumored for a 2028 release, which would mark a major milestone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
These plans raise questions about where Deadpool fits going forward. Industry chatter suggests Avengers: Secret Wars could reshape the current timeline, possibly allowing Deadpool to join a new X-Men lineup while still remembering past events. Reynolds has also hinted that his next appearance might not be a solo film, opening the door for team-ups or a project like X-Force.

For now, Marvel appears to be taking a measured approach. The studio is prioritizing long-term planning over quick sequels, even for one of its most reliable hits. That may frustrate some fans, but it also suggests Marvel is trying to avoid the rushed decisions that have hurt recent franchise entries.
