Patrik Walker is an Emmy Award–winning writer who covers all things Comics & Superheroes. His work can also be found at the Dallas Cowboys, The Sporting News, and CBS Sports, among other outlets. One of the most respected names in his field, he is also a diehard enthusiast of all things comics, anime, gaming and movies — thriving in spaces where discussions involving those or similar topics reign supreme.
Who will be the next Black Panther? It is still one of the biggest decisions Marvel Studios will have to make, and fairly soon, after the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, seeing as Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler is already putting in work for the third installment in the franchise, reportedly (even if only tentatively) named Black Panther: Shadows of Wakanda.
The projected 2028 release date puts it after both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, so no matter who Shuri relinquishes the mantle to, the reality is MCU fans will presumably be without an answer to that casting question regarding T'Challa's long-term successor for some time to come.
The good news, however, is that King T'Challa is still dominating the comic book space as one of Marvel Comics' favorite and most popular superheroes. This time around, they've decided to pair him with another seriously powerful character, none other than Namor a.k.a. Kukulkan, thanks to a threat so ominous and destructive it requires a tag team effort to take him down.
Introducing Black Panther/Namor: Doomed!, a five-part limited series that guarantees Black Panther will take on Dr. Doom, even if the character doesn't make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday alongside Namor (Tenoch Huerta).

Black Panther, Namor Team Up to Face Dr. Doom
Per the official release: "The saga spins out of Avengers: Armageddon, where the pair take part in the Avengers’ explosive battle with Red Hulk, and Captain America, where Doctor Doom was recently revealed to be in Hell following his death in One World Under Doom."
It continued: "Testing their uneasy bond like never before, T’Challa and Namor embark on a supernatural quest to the underworld to confront Doom after their respective kingdoms are attacked by demonic forces. What the two proud leaders discover about the nature of the threat—and about themselves—will topple the monarchies of the Marvel Universe forever…"
That means Black Panther and Namor must put their differences to the side and will literally go through Hell to try and get a victory against Doom — the two venturing into the underworld after both Wakanda and Atlantis are assaulted by demonic forces.
A Powerful Marvel Team-Up That Might Not Appear in Avengers: Doomsday
With the casting question unanswered, barring a spectacular surprise (hi, Damson Idris), don't expect Black Panther to show up in Avengers: Doomsday, save for maybe a spot by Shuri. Namor will be there though, as noted above, but that means Black Panther/Namor: Doom! might be the only real chance Marvel fans get at seeing the two team up in the near future.
“Truly, we feel like the most fortunate writers on Earth to get to tell stories with any of the iconic heroes from the limitless sandbox of the Marvel Universe, let alone icons as monumental as T’Challa, Namor, and Victor Von Doom,” Parker said. “Black Panther is one of the coolest and most inspiring figures in all of fiction, and the Sub-Mariner’s iconic rivalry with him as one of the founding members of Marvel dating back to 1939 is the most hilarious and compelling dynamic we could hope to put our own personal spin on."
"We can’t wait to show readers the unimaginable dangers that lie ahead in this bold new era.”
The sentiments are echoed by Sheridan.
“T’Challa, Namor, and Doom are among the richest characters comics have to offer,” he added. “Not only are all three of them iconic in their own right, but the interpersonal relationships they have with each other seem to be an endless wellspring for enthralling stories. These are colossal characters, so we’re throwing a story with colossal stakes at them – a story that finds Black Panther, Sub-Mariner, and Doctor Doom all in unique, new roles within the Marvel Universe. For those reasons and many others, working on DOOMED has been a real privilege.”
