Dynamite Entertainment has been on fire recently with its licensed comic book series. It has become one of the leading comic book companies in the entire industry in terms of doing quality licensed comic books, and the company is seeing a lot of recent success, including the blockbuster release of its new Ben 10 comic book series, which has gone through multiple printings of its first two issues.

Dynamite's newest addition to its roster of licensed comic book series is a return to the world of comics for Firefly, which hasn't appeared in a comic book since 2024. The new Firefly series will be written by award-winning comic book writer, Mark Russell, who is making a return to Dynamite after an acclaimed run on Red Sonja a few years back. He is joined by artist Lorenzo Re.

The new Firefly series will launch in September.

What is Firefly's Comic Book History?

Those Left Behind Image via Dark Horse

The first Firefly comic book series came out from Dark Horse in 2005, and it was co-written by the series' creator, Joss Whedon, along with Brett Matthews, who had been Whedon's assistant on a few of Whedon's TV shows (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly). The comic book was meant to bridge the gap between the end of the TV series and the release of the then-new film, Serenity.

That's why the comic book series (drawn by Will Conrad) was called Serenity: Those Left Behind, and not Firefly: Those Left Behind.

That series was followed by ANOTHER sequel series by Whedon, Matthews, and Conrad set between the TV show and the movie in 2008 called Serenity: Better Days.

Over the course of the next nine years, Dark Horse released a number of miniseries, written by people like Patton Oswalt, Zack Whedon, and Chris Roberson.

In 2018, BOOM! acquired the license to the series, and launched an ongoing Firefly series written by Greg Pak that ran for 36 issues until 2021, set before the events of the TV series. Dan McDaid was the original artist on the book.

After that series ended, BOOM! tried two different approaches over the next couple of years. First, there was Firefly: Brand New ‘Verse, by Josh Lee Gordon and Fabiana Mascolo, set 20 years after Serenity, with the ship now captained by Zoe and Wash's daughter. Then there was All-New Firefly, by David Booher and Jordi Perez, the first of a couple of series set soon after Serenity.

BOOM! gave up the license in 2005, and now we shall see in what direction Dynamite goes with the property!
