James Gunn’s DCU may have faced a few challenges getting off the ground, but this summer we’ll finally see its first live-action production, “Superman,” hit theaters on July 11. While “Creature Commandos” is still technically the first DCU project, it’s animated and only available on MAX, so most people may not have paid attention to it.
Rumors are now swirling about a pair of potential big-name stars joining the cast, with Tom Cruise and Chris Pratt being mentioned for the role of Jor-El, Superman’s biological father. However, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Insider Jeff Sneider claims Gunn still has “big surprises” for the “Superman” cast. While Cruise signed a deal with Warner Bros. last year, it’s unclear if this means he’ll actually appear in a DC project. As for Pratt, his potential involvement seems even less likely due to his ongoing commitments to Marvel.
Even if these rumors turn out to be true, it’s debatable whether a big-name cameo as Jor-El would significantly impact the movie’s success. Previous Superman films have featured well-known actors in this role, but it’s typically a small part. The movie is set for release July 11, 2025.
The DCU’s upcoming slate includes:
-
“Superman” (July 11, 2025)
-
“Peacemaker” Season 2 (Fall 2025)
-
“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” (2026)
-
“Lanterns” series (2026)
While these projects sound promising, it’s too early to tell if they’ll help the DCU gain a strong foothold in the superhero movie landscape. Fans should temper their expectations and wait for official announcements rather than getting caught up in casting rumors.
