Legendary Announces New Skull Island MonsterVerse Series

Legendary Comics and Titan Comics have announced a brand-new comic book series, Return to Skull Island, which expands the MonsterVerse. The five-issue limited series will debut this June.

Per Variety, Return to Skull Island is set in the world of Legendary and Netflix's Skull Island: The Animated Series. Simon Furman (Transformers) will write the upcoming series, with art by Christopher Jones (Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord). Return to Skull Island will continue Skull Island's story and follow a group of survivors stranded on the perilous South Pacific island. As they uncover its dark secrets, they face life-threatening challenges and fight for survival in a land where every creature is a threat, including Kong. Return to Skull Island #1 will feature a main cover by acclaimed artist Inhyuk Lee.

Titan Comics' Return to Skull Island editor Louis Yamani is excited to bring the new MonsterVerse story to fans. "Skull Island's shadows hide untold stories, fierce battles, and creatures unlike anything seen before," he said. "Marrying brilliant illustrations and epic storytelling, we see a new side to Kong and his kingdom. We can't wait to share more this June."

SVP and publisher at Legendary Comics, Robert Napton, expressed happiness about the partnership with Titan Comics and Skull Island's expansion into the comic medium. "Partnering with Titan Comics on Return to Skull Island allows us to expand the MonsterVerse in exciting new ways," he stated. "Bringing Skull Island from TV to comics lets us dive deeper into its mysteries, offering fans thrilling new adventures in Kong's world."

Return to Skull Island's Animated Prelude and Other Upcoming MonsterVerse Projects

The upcoming Return to Skull Island series spins out of 2023's Skull Island. Produced by Powerhouse Animation, JP, and Legendary Television and animated by South Korean studio Mir, Skull Island is the MonsterVerse franchise's fifth installment and first television series. It is also a sequel to 2017's live-action Kong: Skull Island. The series features the voices of Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, and Betty, who portray shipwrecked characters that end up on Skull Island in 1993.

Return to Skull Island joins other exciting upcoming MonsteVerse projects. Franchise fans have Grant Sputore's yet-to-be-titled feature film follow-up to Adam Wingard's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to look forward to, in addition to the second season of Apple TV+'s well-received Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Return to Skull Island #1 will arrive in comic book shops on June 4, 2025.
