The official solicit synopsis for Magic: The Gathering: Untold Stories — Jace #1 from Dark Horse Comics reads, "Jace Beleren is the most talented mind mage in the Multiverse. A master of telepathy, illusion, and memory distortion, Jace’s heroic feats are tainted by a duplicitous past that threatens to unravel him at any given moment."
The solicit text continues, "Dive deep into Jace's lost memories to uncover the manipulation by his mentor, Tezzeret, in pursuit of a dangerous magical artifact with the potential to reshape or destroy the Multiverse as we know it."
Introduced as one of Magic: The Gathering's five original playable Planeswalkers with the release of Lorwyn all the way back in 2007, Jace Beleren has long been considered the face of the game as a whole. Over the years, Jace's personal history was slowly unraveled, all while the character's adventures across various planes saw him step into roles such as that of the Living Guildpact or as one of the founders of the Gatewatch.
Apart from the many storylines that Jace has been a part of as told through official short story releases from Wizards of the Coast, the character has also played a key role in a multitude Magic: The Gathering of tie-in media. In fact, Jace was a central figure in BOOM! Studios' own Magic: The Gathering comic book series, which came to a close in 2023 after 25 issues.
The upcoming release of a new Magic: The Gathering comic book series comes as a major boon for fans, who have spent the past few years watching the game's mainline story fall by the wayside to an ever-increasing number of Universes Beyond releases. These sets expand the in-game Multiverse beyond the bounds of the Planes players are used to, incorporating the casts of properties ranging from Warhamer 40,000 to The Lord of the Rings to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into the wider world of Magic: The Gathering.
Magic: The Gathering fans have also suffered several major setbacks when it comes to seeing the game expand into more popular territory in general. Back in 2024, former Superman star Brandon Routh confirmed that the long-awaited Magic: The Gathering animated series from Netflix was officially "not happening."
This past February, however, it was confirmed that Nirvana the Band the Show co-creator and BlackBerry writer-director Matt Johnson had signed on to helm a Magic: The Gathering feature film from Hasbro and Legendary Entertainment. "I'm still in the middle of it, that's very much happening," Johnson said at the time. "It's the biggest project I've ever been a part of in my life and I'm amazed it's happening. As of today, as of this conversation, it's very much full speed ahead."
