Marvel Assistant-Sized Spectacular #1-2 (2009): 1st Galacta

Honoring April Fool’s Day, Marvel revived its old “Assistant Editors” concept from the ’80s.  The crew appear in framing sequences…

Much of this is non-canonical humor, but I’m covering the stories that actually do appear to be canon.  First, D-Man (who we haven’t seen in forever) takes on a Captain America role in Baghdad…

This is the first really serious depiction of D-Man, who was killed by Scourge many many years ago. I don’t know if Marvel was seriously attempting a reboot, if this was supposed to be a flashback or alternate reality, or what. But it was pretty good. Not funny, though, which is weird given that this book is a throwback to one of Marvel’s most popular events of all time–and it’s ONLY humous event in history.

Then Jason Aaron offers a short story of American Eagle fighting (humiliating) Cottonmouth.

In issue #2, comedian Wyatt Cenac scripts a Luke Cage story and there’s an Elsa Bloodstone feature. Perhaps most notably, this is the first appearance of Galacta, an anime girl version of Galactus who will develop a strange kind of cult fan base.

Nothing here reaches the epic wonderfulness of the original event, but it’s fine.
