The following contains major spoilers for Captain America #11, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The death of Captain America is about to push Marvel's latest ongoing war into entirely new territory.

Captain America #11 (by Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and VC's Joe Caramagna) picks up with the Star Spangled Avenger and his allies as they do everything they can to rescue a young clone of Victor Von Doom, only for their efforts to be upset by the sudden arrival of General Thunderbolt Ross and his personal army. Luckily, Cap and the others are more than capable of saving the boy's life, even if it means Steve Rogers ending up in literal Hell for his heroism.

The official solicit synopsis for Captain America #11 from Marvel Comics reads, "DOOM'S ULTIMATE WEAPON REVEALED ON THE ROAD TO ARMAGEDDON! Steve puts aside his mission to protect Victor Von Doom’s ultimate weapon from both the U.S. and Latveria, which puts him on a dangerous collision course with Red Hulk’s ALL-NEW, ALL-HULK strike team! But there are some wars not even Captain America can win... Witness the spark that starts the fire of ARMAGEDDON in this can’t-miss issue!"

The current events that Captain America has been swept up in (and ultimately killed by) began with the death of Doctor Doom last year. After finally laying claim to the entire world as the self-proclaimed supreme leader of Earth, Doom found his reign threatened by all manner of outside forces. When his attempt to secure his rule once and for all ended in the death of Valeria Richards, Doom gave up his own life to save that of his goddaughter, inadvertently setting off a race to claim his former stronghold and resources in the process.

Now, multiple groups have made their move on Latveria, all of whom are looking for the absolute most powerful weapons that Doom amassed. Among these are the Latverian Liberators and True Latverians, both of whom are willing to lay down their lives for their cause, as well as the generally pacifist Homeland Party. Then, there is General Thunderbolt Ross, whose personal vendetta against Doom has driven him to try and lay claim to Latveria as his own, or at least ensure no other threat can do so for themselves.

This is all building up to Marvel's upcoming Armageddon event, which is set to completely upend the usual status quo of the Marvel Universe. Apart from the myriad of problems that have emerged ahead of Armageddon, the event will force Earth's Mightiest Heroes to confront an entirely new generation of villains who have been given powers meant for infinitely more heroic figures.
