The original Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of Archie Goodwin and George Tuska's Hero for Hire #1 all the way back in 1971. After growing up in Harlem and becoming a prominent force for good in the neighborhood, Luke was framed for drug crimes and incarcerated in Seagate Prison. There, he was subjected to cruel, strange experiments that imbued him with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. This was more than enough to give Luke a fighting chance against his oppressors, ultimately kicking off one of the most influential superhero careers of all time.

The Danny Rand of the primary Marvel Universe first appeared in 1974's Marvel Premiere #15 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. Although he spent much of his formative years living an affluent lifestyle courtesy of his parents' sprawling corporate empire and vast estate, Danny was subjected to a harrowing fate after he lost his parents during one of his father's searches for the fabled city of K'un-Lun. Though his parents passed away in their trek, Danny did indeed find K'un-Lun, where he was raised and trained by some of the greatest warriors of all time before coming into his own as the Iron Fist.

Early on in their respective comic book careers, Luke Cage and Danny Rand crossed paths, sparking up an immediate lifelong friendship. More importantly, this led to the eventual formation of the Heroes for Hire as fans know them today in the pages of 1978's Power Man and Iron Fist #54. Although the group originally consisted solely of its two founding members, the Heroes for Hire organization has expanded in the decades since it was formed, with everyone from White Tiger to the Disco Devil having taken up residence as a member of the team at one point or another.
