The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #23, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

An unexpected team of villains just embarrassed Tony Stark in front of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

The eponymous heroes of Avengers #23 have spent the past few weeks plotting out their grand heist of the Grandmaster's cosmic casino, only to find themselves beaten to the prize by none other than Kang the Conqueror and his accomplice, the Black Cat. Worse still, the heroes have come under siege from the extradimensional band of bounty hunters known as Technet, each of whom wields their own unique set of powers. In the case of the infantile Joyboy, those powers just so happen to include an unsettling form of wish fulfillment, and it only takes a moment for them to downgrade Tony Stark from Iron Man into a version of his own personal hero — Captain America.

Joyboy is one of the original members of Technet who first appeared in Jamie Delano and Alan Davis' opening story from 1985's Captain Britain #3, "Flotsam and Jetsam." When they were introduced, Technet were on the hunt for a version of Captain Britain at the behest of Opal Luna Saturnyne's twisted variant, Sat-Yr-Nin. During their early appearances, Joyboy displayed just how twisted his powers could be by granting Shadowcat her wish to once again be tangible, albeit in the form of a enormously bloated version of her former self.

The Avengers took up their mission to infiltrate the Grandmaster's casino and its auction house in the hopes of acquiring a host of data that previously belonged to Kang the Conqueror. Although the Avengers and Kang are both working against the forces of the malevolent and mysterious Myrrdin, the two have each taken on separate attempts to steal away with the same prize. For Kang, this means employing Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat, to help him pull off a heist that is just as impossible if far less secretive than what Earth's Mightiest Heroes had planned for themselves.

Marvel's newest Wall-Crawler just lost the most important fight of his life, and it could be the beginning of a new reign of terror in New York City.

All of this heisting has been in the hopes of uncovering further clues that can lead to the Missing Moment, a singular point in time that is shrouded in mystery and has so far been completely undetectable to the likes of Kang. Along with the Missing Moment have come various other Tribulation Events, profoundly important moments in time that are said to be meant for heroes to meet them head on. So far, these Tribulation Events have included some truly unforgettable storylines ranging from the arrival of the Ashen Combine on Earth to the very nearly successful vampiric takeover of the entire world during Marvel Comics' Blood Hunt crossover event.
