Marvel Rivals (from NetEase Games, in development with Marvel Games) has captured the hearts and minds of comic book fans for its impressive faithfulness to the classic Marvel characters that you can play in the game (like how the characters even have interactions within the game that are based on how the characters interact with each other in the comic books), and now it will actually BE a Marvel comic book, as Marvel has announced a print collection of the Marvel Infinity Marvel Rivals webcomic.

The series will be collected into a single one-shot, Marvel Rivals #1, and is written by Paul Allor and drawn by artist Luca Claretti. The covers for the comic book one-shot will be by Tokitokoro, Federico Sabbatinil, and Adam Warren.

What is Marvel Rivals the video game about?

The central conflict of Marvel Rivals is between Doctor Doom and his futuristic counterpart, Doom 2099, which leads to a battle that results in a "Timestream Entanglement," which is sort of like Marvel's 2015 crossover, Secret Wars, in the sense that various worlds have been pulled together, and different time periods are now suddenly co-existing. The heroes in the game are split between heroes from the "modern" era, and versions of the heroes from the future (obviously, the heroes in the future are mostly characters with artificially long lives, like Wolverine and Black Widow). In the modern era, one of the effects of the "Timestream Entanglement" has been New York City is now overrun by vampires, so a lot of the main Marvel heroes based in New York (whcih is a lot of them) are very preoccupied with that.

As noted, what makes the game stand out is how detailed the characters are. The game's creative director, Guangyun Chen, has specifically noted, "When it comes to designing characters in our game, we usually dive really deep into the background and personality of each Marvel character, so every character's gameplay mechanic and skill is really crafted to reflect who these heroes really are in the comics."

As for this new comic book story, Marvel released the following description of the comic book:

Set in Tokyo 2099, the time rift has disrupted the Web of Life and Destiny, leaving the world’s heroes to battle it out over the best way to fix it. One group, led by Peni Parker, wants to plug the Web into Cyberspace to repair it. The other group, led by Spider-Man, favors a more conservative approach of using Chronovium to strengthen the web and allow it to repair itself. The time rift makes rivals out of us all, but which team will overtake the other?

Marvel Rivals #1 is due out on April 2nd.
