Or rather, she would be able to do so if not for the sudden appearance of a shadowy intruder. James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes is one of the Marvel Universe's oldest heroes, with his debut coming right alongside Steve Rogers' own in the opening story from 1940's Captain America Comics #1, "Meet Captain America," by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. After losing his parents as a child and being separated from his sister, Bucky found a home for himself within Camp Lehigh rather than the boarding school he was meant to grow up in. From there, it was only a matter of time before he became enamored with Captain America, who he joined forces with as a kid sidekick.

When Captain America was plunged into the English Channel in a fiery explosion and left frozen in suspended animation for decades, Bucky was picked up by a Russian submarine, who rebuilt and brainwashed the young hero into serving as their Winter Soldier. For years, the Winter Soldier carried out covert missions and government-sanctioned assassinations, helping to shape the course of history as a whole. When the Winter Soldier finally crossed paths with Captain America in the modern day, their confrontation paved the way for Bucky's eventual recovery, after which he was able to begin digging into the mysteries surrounding his own life.

Marvel's Most Powerful Hero Is Returning

One of the most iconic heroes in the history of Marvel Comics has just stepped into a fight that spans time, space, and even the Multiverse.

During the events of 2022's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero, the titular hero and his allies became engulfed in the conspiracy surrounding the secretive Outer Circle. This shadowy organization were revealed to have been behind the majority of world events since the 1920s, all of which were orchestrated as part of a grand game played between the Outer Circle's five core members. When Bucky took the life of the Outer Circle's former Revolution, a fictionalized version of real-world political assassin Gavrilo Princip, he was given the chance to take up that mantle for himself, with which he set about dismantling the Outer Circle from the inside.
