Marvel Studios has released an official synopsis for the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps and it verifies one of the more controversial castings, Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer.
“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer. And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
Not sure why Marvel Studios has gender-swapped the classically male character of the Silver Surfer, but this is current year Disney, so it’s not a surprise. We reported that was their plan back in April, but Marvel is only confirming it now. Fans of the original character are both bewildered and disappointed in the unnecessary change.
Other actors tied to the film, but their roles are not confirmed are Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne and Sara Niles. Though it is believed that the film will have a montage style opening with various villains to establish the team’s history before they are pitted against the World Devourer. The film is being directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman and set to release July 25th, 2025.
