The X-Men are about to enter the Age of Revelation - and it is horrifying.

In a preview from Marvel Comics, fans can get their first look at the upcoming The Age of Revelation, which will mark a new era in X-Men history much like "Fall of X" and "From the Ashes" have over the past few years. While information regarding this era/event is scarce, the teaser art from Humberto Ramos holds more than a few clues for fans to pick over, as does the name itself.

The Age of Revelation Teaser Uses Classic Imagery to Set the Stage

The preview art features the image of numerous mutants crucified on tall wooden posts in the shape of an X. Among those subjected to such inhumane treatment is none other than the X-Men's longtime, steadfast leader, Cyclops, as well as a mutant who appears to be fan-favorite Glob. In the background, fans can catch a glimpse of a downed S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, which implies that the clandestine paramilitary organization will have some part to play when The Age of Revelation arrives this October.

The image of mutants crucified on an X and bathed in yellow or green light goes all the way back to 1989's Uncanny X-Men #251 by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri. The issue's cover and story both featured Wolverine being crucified as such as part of his torture at the hands of the villainous Reavers. In the years since then, the same image has been invoked numerous times, most recently during Professor Charles Xavier's psychic confrontation with Quentin Quire, during which the former tormented the latter in the exact same fashion.

Spider-Man has a powerful new friend (or foe) who can clear an entire city block with one strike, and that might be a serious problem.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of The Age of Revelation is the prospect of Revelation taking center stage after waiting in the wings for so long. It was in the pages of 2024's X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse #4 by Steve Foxe and Netho Diaz when Douglas Ramsey, better known as Cypher, claimed his place as the one rightful heir to Apocalypse's dreadful legacy. In doing so, Cypher was transformed from his formerly meek self into the hulking, gilded Revelation. Since then, Revelation has only appeared in the recently-released X-Men #19, during which the former mutant hero not only embraced his place as the heir to Apocalypse, but the lethal extremes he will have to go to to carry out his newfound great purpose.
