New 007 Owners Amazon MGM Make Public Commitment to Theatrical Releases
Amazon MGM Studios is making a big commitment to movie theaters, according to reporting by Deadline.
Courtenay Valenti, the head of film, streaming and theatrical, made the announcement at SXSW over the weekend that the company would likely release between 12 and 14 films into theaters next year as part of a ramping up to their commitment to the big screen. They hope to release 16 films by 2027. While they still believe that not every film works best in theaters, a theatrical release does give a bump to a film when it hits streaming.

While not mentioned, this move will likely help the studio attract directors who previously shied away from studios tied to streaming services because of the lack of a theatrical release. A move like this would help the studio find a director for their upcoming James Bond films, perhaps even Christopher Nolan who has said he wanted to do a Bond film and was up for one in the past but couldn’t come to an agreement with the previous producers on who would have final cut.

Nolan was also against films not getting a theatrical release.
