New Avengers: The Reunion #1-4 (2009)

Hawkeye was “killed” but came back after House of M.  Mockingbird was “killed” but is back now after her Secret Invasion skrull replacement was actually killed with no air quotes.

Before their deaths, the two were a couple.  Married, actually.  But their marriage was starting to fracture because Mockingbird got raped by a time-traveling Western hero, and didn’t want to admit to Hawkeye that she’d killed her rapist.

Or something like that.  It never made a whole lot of sense that a trained spy with kick-ass karate abilities couldn’t take ownership of responding violently to a violent act.  What did make sense about it was that Hawkeye acted like an insensitive dick throughout the whole thing, especially when the truth was revealed and he couldn’t forgive her for killing someone.  Because being a dick is what Clint does. Or at least used to do. Now that Mockingbird is back, he’s different. And when she goes missing, he goes after her.

Anyway, they’re reunited now–and apparently time has changed them.  Now, Hawkeye is no longer a dick.

He’s a fawning and desperate to win back Mockingbird’s love.  And she’s as strong as she SHOULD have been–taking the lead in the relationship.

These changes are both welcome and make sense, given what the characters have been through.  Hawkeye on his side recognizes the need for love, and Mockingbird was kidnapped and held hostage so she’s ready to kick ass and control her own life.

As for what happens in this comic:  We  get to see Bobbi’s experiences as a hostage of the skrulls–including killing a skrull version of her husband.

Then, she and some SHIELD agents, all of whom where taken by the skrulls, use stolen skrull intel to neutralize damage done during the skrulls’ extended period on Earth while they prepped for the invasion, much of which involves AIM’s chief scientist Monica Rappacini.  Most of it is set-up for a future ongoing by the same creative team, where they will be doing spy-work together.

And we end with the two as a couple, embracing a “dating” life together.
