X-Men: Outback is bringing Marvel's mutant heroes back to one of their most iconic (and devastating) eras.

Marvel Comics has officially unveiled the next hotly-anticipated throwback series — X-Men: Outback. Written by Steve Orlando and illustrated by Stephen Segovia, X-Men: Outback will drop readers into the middle of Australia during a time when many of the X-Men were believed dead, while others were simply looking for a new horizon to race toward.

The official solicit synopsis for X-Men: Outback #1 from Marvel Comics reads, "FROM THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK! Journey back to a time when the public believed Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, Colossus, Dazzler, Havok, Psylocke, and Longshot were dead. But from the shadows, these X-Men protected humanity from their Australian headquarters! But why did the team choose the Outback as their home base? How did tensions between them almost tear the team apart? And which of their old enemies threatened to expose their secret?"

The X-Men originally made their way to Australia following the infamous Fall of the Mutants storyline back in 1987. By the time the event came to a close the following year, numerous mutant heroes were believed to have lost their lives in the conflict, leaving them to join their old allies in moving to Australia in search of a quieter home to call their own.

While the X-Men's time in the Outback is remembered fondly by longtime fans, it was also the era in which some of the most horrifying enemies and harrowing storylines were introduced. Among the worst of these were the Reavers, who helped give rise to the entire trope of X-Men being crucified out in the open.

X-Men: Outback writer Steve Orlando recently opened up about his personal connection to the series itself, noting, "It's a rare thing, something you logically don't expect, to get the chance as a creator to work in the time period that made you love a comic, a team, or a character. For me, picking up issues where I could at flea markets and spinner racks of the late '80s and '90s, the outback was the first place I met the X-Men on the page."

More excitement was shared about the return of a landmark X-Men comic. "...And they all but leapt off it! The tension, the struggle to carve out a new life, the explosive personalities...and the NEW," Orlando continued. "It was such a bold era, enough to make me a fan for life. Now, to get to work in that time period with X-MEN: OUTBACK? That's not even something the young me would've thought possible."

Regarding what fans can expect from X-Men: Outback, Orlando stated, "We've got an incredible team with Stephen Segovia and Russell Dauterman—and we're cooking up stories that celebrate and elevate the era. And in its spirit, you'll of course be seeing some familiar faces...but just the same—there'll be all new threats, connections, and secret exes on the way!"

X-Men: Outback #1 from Marvel Comics goes on sale starting on June 24.
