The Girl of Steel is joining DC's company-wide "Summer of Superman" publishing initiative ahead of her DCU debut in James Gunn's Superman movie this July. Written and illustrated by Wet Moon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles's Sophie Campbell, Supergirl #1 is now available for pre-order and will hit comic book shelves on May 14.
Per DC, the upcoming Supergirl series will take Kara Zor-El in a new direction, away from Metropolis and back to the town of Midvale. "But returning to her hometown after so many years away already presents some challenges: there's already another Supergirl there, protecting the town and saving the day." The Maiden of Might must discover the imposter's identity and stop them before her life is stolen. Supergirl will sport a brand-new costume designed by acclaimed artist Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, who also provides a card stock and foil variant covers for the first issue alongside Campbell's main cover. Bilquis Evely (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), Pablo Villalobos, Joshua Middleton, and W. Scott Forbes also provide variant covers.

Campbell discussed her upcoming Supergirl series, citing the various influences on her work. "I came up in the comics industry doing mostly graphic novels that I wrote and drew myself, so doing the same with Supergirl feels like I'm returning to my storytelling roots," she began. "My main touchstones to Kara Zor-El were the stories and the wild costumes from the '70s, the 1984 Supergirl movie, and the CW Supergirl show, which I was a huge fan of. In creating this version of Supergirl, I'll be drawing on some of those influences as the series unfolds."
Artgerm talked about his costume design for Supergirl. "Having done artwork for video games, I'm pretty familiar with creating character designs and costumes," he said. "In designing a new costume for Supergirl, I wanted to create something fresh while keeping the key elements intact. I adopted the theme of 'sporty and fun, but packs a punch' and incorporated those elements in the costume. I also changed the chest symbol to give it a more dynamic spin. Sophie captures the look perfectly, and I can't wait for readers to see it."

DC's Summer of Superman
Part of DC's All-In Initiative, Supergirl will arrive one week before Dan Slott and Rafael Albuquerque's Superman Unlimited. Both "Summer of Superman" titles tie into DC Studios' Superman movie, which hits theaters on July 11. Preceding the arrival of Superman Unlimited, Slott and Alburquerque will create a 10-page prelude in DC All In 2025 FCBD Special Edition #1, which arrives on May 3 as part of the publisher's Free Comic Book Day event.
Supergirl #1 will arrive in comic book shops on May 14, 2025.
