Nick Reiner Won’t Face Death Penalty in Parents’ Killing

Los Angeles County prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner if he is convicted of killing his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner. District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision Sept. 15 before a court hearing in Los Angeles. He said the office reviewed aggravating and mitigating factors, consulted law enforcement and prosecutors, and spoke with the victims’ family before making its call. “After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district attorney’s office will not be seeking the death penalty in this case,” Hochman said. “That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole.” Nick Reiner, 33, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. A Los Angeles County grand jury indicted him last month in the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home. The indictment includes a special allegation that he was lying in wait before the attack.
