One of DC’s Most Powerful Forces Is Turning Poison Ivy’s Closest Ally Against Her

The following contains major spoilers for Poison Ivy #30, on sale now from DC Comics.

A fan-favorite DC Comics character is on the verge of betraying the most important villain in Gotham City.

While the titular antivillain of Poison Ivy #30 is busy becoming the newest emissary for the metaphysical, mycelial force known as The Grey, her friend and confidant Janet Mitchell is being chased through the forests of Marshview by an entirely different force of nature. In this case, that monstrous force is none other than the Parliament of Trees, who have come with an offer that Janet has no reason to take up. At the same time, Janet was already beginning to question her loyalty to Poison Ivy, and vice versa, long before the Parliament of Trees asked her to betray her closest ally, and it might not take much more to push her over that edge.

Janet Mitchell, better known as Janet-from-HR, made her DC Comics debut in G. Willow Wilson and Emma Rios' story "Ophiocordyceps Lamia" from the pages of 2022's oversized Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant #1. Formerly a human resources worker at one of Gotham City's many chemical plants, Janet found a couple of unlikely kindred spirits in the forms of Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Soon enough, Janet was taking on key roles of her own in storylines such as DC's mind-bending Night Terrors crossover event, and all without any powers to help her along the way.

The Parliament of Trees was first seen in the pages of 1986's Swamp Thing #47 by Alan Moore and Stan Woch. A collective of various plant-based entities from throughout the ages, the Parliament of Trees serves as the voice and emissary for the elemental force known as the Green. Similar to the way that The Red connects all animal life throughout the Multiverse and beyond, The Green connects all plant life by way of an ethereal, almost mystical force of nature that has been at the heart of dozens of comics featuring the likes of Swamp Thing.

The Batman Family is about to lose one of its most important members, and it could be the next thing that completely breaks the Bat.

When Poison Ivy sacrificed her own life to prevent the Floronic Man from unleashing countless deadly spores into the atmosphere, she was carried into the depths of the infamous Slaughter Swamp and resurrected with a little help from fellow longtime villain Solomon Grundy. Since her return, Poison Ivy has demonstrated a greater reach than ever before, though not without some major issues emerging because of this increased power. As it turns out, Ivy's resurrection came at great expense to The Grey, the universal force that connects all fungal and mycelial life forms. Ivy's return has also led to the emergence of Gotham's latest bio-terrorist group known as the Order of the Green Knight, who have carried out numerous attacks in her name, and without her consent.
